2-year-old Boy Left Almost Blinded After Being Scalded by Hot Oil While His Mother Was Cooking

A little boy has suffered mind-blowing burns to his body after he was scalded by hot oil when his mother was cooking.

Teddy and his mother

A tot has suffered horrific injuries after being scalded by hot oil while his mum cooked a roast dinner.

Little Teddy was almost blinded as well as being left with third and second-degree burns after the pan of oil caught fire.

Jerry Mitchell, 30, has issued a warning to parents after the two-year-old had to undergo two skin grafts to treat injuries to his face and right hand.

The mum-of-three was cooking crispy roast potatoes in March this year, while her partner Martin Barker played with six-year-old twins Archie and George.

As she began preparing carrots, oil that that had been heating in a pan burst into flames.

Jerry, of Birmingham said: “I screamed for Martin and he ran into the kitchen seconds later.

“Then he grabbed the pan and placed it into the sink.

“But the running water from the tap caused the flames to explode up into the air, so he dashed outside into the garden.”

As Martin fled through the hallway, Teddy, who had been playing in the living room, ran into the kitchen.

Teddy was scalded

Jerry said: “I had no time to react as Teddy ran into his dad’s legs. Oil splashed out from the pan, scalding Teddy’s face and right hand.

“As I watched the skin peeling off his face, I screamed. It was horrific. The next few minutes seemed to last an eternity.”

Paramedics arrived in minutes as the family desperately ran the youngster's burns under cold water.

Teddy was rushed to Birmingham Children’s Hospital and placed on the burns ward where doctors gave him morphine for the pain and bandaged his burns.

The next morning, Teddy’s face had swollen further and he told his mum he couldn't see.

Doctors had to wait several days for the swelling to go down before they could confirm there had been no permanent damage to the tot's sight.

A few days later he was discharged from hospital but the memories of the accident still haunt him.

Jerry explained: “When we arrived home, as we opened the front door, he screamed and refused to go into the hallway where he was burned.

“He was so scared that we had to carry him past the doorway to the kitchen. He’s terrified of fire now.”

Jerry added: “Doctors are pleased with his progress but have said that he might need more operations in the future.

“Thankfully he doesn’t have nightmares of his accident but he hates looking at his reflection in the mirror.

“I do worry about him being bullied in the future as he’ll be scarred for life."
