Super Falcons midfielder Uchenna Kanu has disclosed that the emotional devastation following Nigeria's WAFCON quarter-final elimination manifested in tangible ways, with several players unable to sustain normal eating patterns in the aftermath of the loss.

Nigeria's continental title defence collapsed following a 1-0 defeat to Cameroon in Casablanca, an outcome that simultaneously extinguished their automatic qualification pathway to the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup.

Cameroon's progression secured them one of Africa's direct World Cup berths, forcing Nigeria toward a more arduous playoff qualification route.

Kanu characterised the emotional toll as pervasive within the squad, extending well beyond the immediate post-match period. More than a day after the defeat, multiple players remained emotionally devastated, with some abstaining from meals entirely.

Kanu herself skipped both breakfast and lunch, eventually consuming food only in the afternoon, describing the collective emotional state as one of profound despondency.

The midfielder, who entered play in the 38th minute, recounted her personal emotional breakdown alongside that of her teammates, describing the result as a complete departure from commitments made to the nation.

She characterised the performance itself as the squad's strongest exhibition at the tournament yet lamented that excellence proved insufficient to secure progression.

Kanu attributed the outcome partly to external factors, citing substandard pitch conditions and inconsistent officiating as contributing elements that fell short of requisite standards.

Despite this setback, she urged the team to derive instructional value from the defeat and redirect focus toward the upcoming South Africa playoff showdown, emphasising the critical importance of maintaining Nigeria's unprecedented unbroken presence at every Women's World Cup iteration since 1991.

Kanu expressed optimism that successful passage through Thursday's playoff would represent the genesis of recovery and renewed purpose.
