At least 168 solar-powered streetlights that were installed along the Longbridge section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway have been stolen by suspected criminals.

In order to increase visibility and improve driver safety, especially at nite, lamps were erected along the roughly five-kilometer bridge in 2025.

However, it has been reported that the bridge's lighting equipment has been removed from a number of its parts; the vandalism is thot to have happened gradually over time.

Concerns have been raised by drivers and business owners that the lights' removal is bringing darkness back to the popular route and possibly putting drivers at greater danger of accidents and criminal attacks.

Richard Adeleye, Ogun State's Federal Controller of Works, acknowledged the theft and said that some suspected vandals had been detained and charged.

Additionally, the Ogun State Police Command reported that suspected vandals who were purportedly captured targeting important facilities along the axis have been arrested.

Authorities have called for more surveillance and more robust measures to safeguard public facilities while urging locals to report suspicious activity.
