A 65-year-old man, Alex Adeshina, was on Wednesday brought before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for his alleged inability to produce a man he stood surety for in court.

Adeshina, whose address was not provided, is facing a charge of perverting the course of justice.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Ingobo Emby, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Feb. 25 at the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) in Ikeja, Lagos.

He said that accused stood surety for one Lucky Mathew, who was charged with conspiracy and obtaining money under false pretence.

Emby said the accused promised to produce Mathew at SARS on Feb. 27 whenever his presence was needed but failed to do so.

He said that the accused should forfeit the N3 million he deposited as bail or show cause why he should not forfeit the sum.

The prosecutor urged the court to deny the accused bail on the grounds that he might jump bail.

Emby said that the offence contravened Section 132 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

In his ruling, the Magistrate, Mr W. B. Balogun, granted the accused bail in the sum of one million naira with one surety in like sum.

Balogun held that the surety must be the accused Adesina stood surety for.

He adjourned the case until Jan. 11, 2018 for mention.
