A final-year student of the Federal University of Technology in Akure, has reportedly died while playing football near the university's gate.

Tunji Agboola

Tunji Agboola, a 500 level student of Applied Geophysics of the Federal University of Technology (FUTA), Akure, Ondo State, reportedly slumped and died while playing football morning at his off campus residence close to the institution’s south gate.

It was gathered that his friends could not take him to the institution’s health centre as members of the institution’s Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), are on strike; they decided to take him to a private hospital.

While reacting to the incident, FUTA’s management expressed sadness, commiserated with the late student’s family and vowed to constantly improve on health care delivery and other services that directly affect the well-being and welfare of students.

In a statement by its spokesman, Adebanjo Adegbenro, FUTA’s management described Tunji Agboola’s death as saddening.

The statement said: “Our prayers are with the family at this very difficult time.

“FUTA commiserates with his immediate family and friends and prays God to grant them the fortitude to bear this painful loss. This is a time of sober reflection.

“As an institution, we will continue to review and strengthen existing structures in terms of health care delivery and other services that directly affect the well-being and welfare of members of the FUTA community, particularly the students who remain our main focus.”

One of the students reported that the private hospital had no oxygen and Agboola was subsequently referred to the State General Hospital by the doctor, who determined that his condition was grave.

“Unfortunately, he was confirmed dead on arrival at the state hospital,” the student added.

None of his friends could confirm if the deceased had any health challenge before his demise.

Meanwhile, the deceased's colleagues in the Nigerian Association of Earth and Mineral Science Students (NAEMSS), Sunday, protested, arguing that he would not have died if the university’s health clinic was functioning.

The timely intervention of NAEMSS President, Victor Awosiji, and other union leaders saved the situation from getting out of hand, as they called on the government to shut down the institution for not having ‘minimal requirements’ to operate.
