A popular African referee has been reportedly kicked out of the World Cup after he was alleged to have received bribes.

Aden Marwa

After receiving the paltry sum in bribe, Aden Marwa forfeited at least Sh2.5 million for appearing at the World Cup, Goal.com reports.

Kenyan referee Aden Marwa, who was headed to the 2018 Fifa World Cup, has been implicated in a bribery scandal.

Marwa was one of the linesmen set to officiate in Russia before the BBC aired an expose that saw the celebrated Kenyan blower allegedly receiving a bribe Sh60, 000 before a match.

Marwa, a Mathematics and Chemistry teacher at Komotobo Secondary school in Migori County, was approached by a journalist posing as a Ghanaian football official during the African National Championship.

After receiving the paltry sum in bribe, Marwa forfeited at least Sh2.5 million for appearing at the World Cup in addition to Sh200, 000 per game officiated after Fifa confirmed that the referee will not be travelling to Russia.

FKF President Nick Mwendwa has vowed to investigate the issue. “We only learnt of the allegations through the media.

"As such, we want to let due process take its course, it's important to note that as a federation we are yet to receive any complaint in regard to the match official, whether written, verbal or implied.”

Marwa, 41, first featured in the 2011 Fifa U-17 World Cup and was among the only four other referees picked from Africa to officiate in the world biggest football extravaganza that is set to kick-off on June 14 to July 15.

It is against the Fifa code of conduct for any match official or officials to accept a bribe.
