Watch the Heartbreaking Moment Show Host Mistakenly Crowned the Wrong Miss Universe 2015 (Photos+Video)

 

Ariadna Gutierrez Arevalo was mistakenly crowned Miss Universe 2015 on national television in Las Vegas on Sunday, Dec. 20, 2015, by co-host and American comedian, Steve Harvey, the pinnacle of any beauty pageant contestant’s career.

 

After Gutierrez-Arévalo was crowned and was performing the ritual wave to the audience inside the Planet Hollywood Las Vegas Resort & Casino, Harvey came back on stage to deliver the awkward and devastating news. 

 

 

 

Then, quickly and devastatingly, her dream died. It turned out that the Hollywood actor, Harvey had read the wrong name. "Okay, folks, I have to apologize," said Harvey, clad in a white tuxedo as Miss Colombia waved to a cheering crowd. "The first runner-up is Colombia," Harvey said.

 

That's when the real winner, Pia Alonzo Wurztbach of the Philippines, began to look around stunned and wondering what had just happened. "Miss Universe 2015 is Philippines," Harvey said, ending the suspense.

 

 

"Listen, folks. Let me just take control of this. This is exactly what's on the card. I will take responsibility for this. It was my mistake. It was on the card. Horrible mistake, but the right thing — I can show it to you right here. The first word is ‘Colombia.’ It is my mistake," Harvey went on to tell the bewildered audience. 

 

Outgoing Miss Universe, Paulina Vega, ironically also from Colombia, fulfilled the dubious obligation of removing the crown and placing it on the rightful winner. 

 

 

"Still a great night. Please don’t hold it against the ladies. Please don’t.  We feel so badly. But it’s still a great night," he said, though Miss Colombia might not have concurred.

 

A few minutes later, Harvey apologized again via social media. He wrote, "I'd like to apologize wholeheartedly to Miss Colombia & Miss Philippines for my huge mistake. I feel terrible."
