ECOWAS and EU placed sanctions against the West African country following a coup in the country.
The European Union and the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS have been urged to lift sanctions on Niger Republic.
Shehu Sani, a former federal lawmaker made the call on Wednesday.
Recall that some military officers led by erstwhile Presidential Guard Commander, General Abdourahamane Tchiani had ousted President Mohamed Bazoum of Niger Republic back in July 2023.
And in reaction, ECOWAS and EU placed sanctions against the West African country.
However, it appears the sanctions are only inflicting more hardship and making life difficult for the poor people.
“The ECOWAS and EU sanctions imposed on Niger Republic is affecting the capacity and capabilities of the country to fight terrorism.” Sani, who served in the 8th Senate, wrote on X.
“We are witnessing escalation of terrorist attacks in Nigeria’s bordering states.
“These sanctions must be lifted in the interest of the collective security of the West African region.”
