In a Lugbe Grade 1 Area Court in Abuja, a 22-year-old unemployed man named Odoh Ernest was formally charged on Wednesday for the alleged act of snatching two cell phones valued at N820,000.
The police charged Ernest with theft and mischief.
The Prosecution Counsel, Mr Steven Osho, informed the court that on Jan. 5 the complainant, Izong Stephenie of Area 10, Garki, reported the matter at the Garki Police Station.
Osho said that the defendant accosted the complainant and her sister while they were returning from the supermarket and snatched their cell phones.
He told the court that the defendant made away with the complainant’s Iphone 12 pro max and her sister’s Techno camo 10 phone all worth N820,000.
The prosecutor said that during the police investigation, the defendant could not give a satisfactory account of himself.
Osho said that the offence contravened the provisions of sections 287 and 327 of the Penal Code.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The judge, Aliyu Kagarko, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N1 million, with one surety in like sum.
Kagarko ordered that the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and produce reliable means of identification.
He adjourned the matter until Jan. 24, for hearing.
