Terrorism Trial: We Hope Nnamdi Kanu Gets Bail on Merit March 19 – Ejimakor

Posted by Thandiubani on Mon 26th Feb, 2024 - tori.ng

Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed March 19 for ruling on Kanu’s bail application.

Aloy Ejimakor, the lead counsel of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has expressed optimism that Kanu would be released soon.

According to him, Kanu is likely to be released during the next court hearing after he applied for bail.

Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja had on Monday fixed March 19 for ruling on Kanu’s bail application.

The judge fixed the date after taking arguments from Ejimakor praying for bail for his client.

However, Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, counsel for the Federal Government, vehemently objected to the bail application.

Kanu predicated his request mainly on the fact that he may not be able to put up a good defense unless admitted to bail to have unfettered access to his lawyers.

He also claimed to be suffering from acute hypertension and acute heart disease, among others.

The Federal Government objection was based on the argument that Kanu was once granted bail but jumped and fled the country.

Speaking after the court session, Ejimakor told DAILY POST, “We hope that Nnamdi Kanu will make bail on the high merits of his application.”

Recall that the Court of Appeal had discharged and acquitted Kanu of all terrorism charges.

But in December 2023, the Supreme Court returned Kanu’s case to the Federal High Court for continuation of prosecution.

This was after the apex court dismissed the Appeal Court’s verdict that discharged and acquitted Kanu of all terrorism charges.

Against this backdrop, the court had scheduled February 8 to resume hearing of Kanu’s terrorism charges.

But the trial was subsequently adjourned till Monday.
