The Walin Sokoto, Hamzat Ahmadu has passed away at a private hospital in Lagos on Sunday, aged 92.
The accomplished diplomat and technocrat who served as Personal Secretary to two Nigerian military leaders: Aguiyi Ironsi and Yakubu Gowon, also served as Nigeria’s Ambassador to United States of America, Germany, France and the former Soviet Union (USSR).
Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal who responded to the news of his death, described him as peace-loving and committed family man who gave invaluable contributions to the unity and development of Nigeria.
A statement issued from the Governor’s office by Imam Imam, quoted Tambuwal as saying,
"He was an accomplished diplomat who distinguished himself in his chosen specialties. As an elder statesman, his wise counsels served both the older and younger generation of leaders not only in Sokoto, but in Nigeria as a whole."
The funeral prayer for the deceased will be performed Monday morning at 10.00 a.m. at the Sultan’s Palace, in Sokoto, according to Islamic rites.
