Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have abducted the Secretary of Kukawa Local Government Council in Borno State, along with one other individual, according to confirmations from local and security sources reported by Daily Trust.
The abduction took place at approximately 1:35 pm on Tuesday at Garin Kashim, as the victims were travelling to Kukawa in a Volkswagen Golf vehicle.
According to a security source, the insurgents intercepted the vehicle, forced the secretary and the other person to disembark, and released the remaining passengers. The abductees were then led into the bush.
A local informant told Daily Trust that the insurgents acted on a tip-off, waiting near the river to ambush the vehicle.
In response, the Sector 3 military command has deployed troops to track and rescue the victims after receiving a distress call. Kukawa Local Government Area lies within the Lake Chad region, a hotspot for Boko Haram activity, where residents and travellers frequently face attacks.
This incident follows a deadly attack by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters just two days earlier, when seven people, including hunters, Civilian Joint Task Force members, and community watch operatives were killed in Magumeri Local Government Area.
There's also a video showing ISWAP militants interrogating and executing captives dressed in red jumpsuits, accusing them of collaboration with “infidels,” a charge used to justify their killings.
