Human rights activist and #RevolutionNow convener, Omoyele Sowore, has disclosed that the Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ajao Adewale, has confirmed the retrieval of his stolen AI-powered eyeglasses from the rogue officer involved.
Sowore noted that the CP, however, said he would not release the eyeglasses because it has a built-in camera.
Sowore made this known while addressing a group of serving police officers during a public demonstration in Abuja.
“Anybody that is willing to arrest me, come out now but you must produce my glasses. I hate thieves. Because that is not possible,” Sowore declared, lamenting what he described as rampant corruption and systemic rot within the Nigeria Police Force.
SaharaReporters had reported that Sowore’s AI-powered eyeglasses was stolen by a rogue police officer in mufti identified as Aku Victor Chiemerie, during a peaceful protest at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, raising grave concerns about the state of security and accountability in the nation.
The protest, held on Monday, July 21, 2025, was organised to demand improved welfare and retirement benefits for Nigerian police officers.
Sowore and other activists, alongside some retired police officers, staged a peaceful demonstration at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters, also known as Louis Edet House, in Abuja.
It was gathered that the eyeglasses are not only medical but embedded with artificial intelligence technology and carry sensitive private data.
Speaking further, Sowore said, “It is the thieves amongst you who are stealing all the pension of the officers, stealing your allowances and salaries.
“Somebody cannot come to the Force Headquarters and have his things stolen, and you say you don't know him.
“If things are not safe at the Force Headquarters, then Nigeria is not safe.”
Sowore, a former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), said that the FCT Police Commissioner admitted to him that the glasses had been retrieved from the officer who stole them, but refused to return the item, citing its technological capability.
“I have been told by the Commissioner of Police of that city that they know the person who took it, that they have collected it from him but because my glasses have camera, according to him, he cannot release it,” Sowore said.
“It is such an embarrassment that the police is afraid of technology. That is why Nigeria Police is what it is today.”
Sowore criticised the lack of modern surveillance tools in the Nigeria police force system, especially body cameras, among serving officers.
“I keep saying, all of you are supposed to have a body camera in 2025. But you don't. And the person who is using technology to aid his vision, and his struggle, his ideas, you steal that vision. You can steal the glasses, but you can't steal my vision. You can't steal my ideas.”
He also urged the officers to reflect on their own conditions and demand justice and improved welfare.
“This is about you. It is about your life. Look at these men who are retired. That's your mirror. See yourself in that mirror. If you like, keep doing slave work,” he warned.
“Keep letting them use you against your future, against your children, against your family.
“Keep letting them use you.
“Keep letting them use you as escorts. Keep letting them use you to be the guard in houses that they built with money stolen from your pension. Nothing is going to improve your lives.”
Sowore, who did not spare the leadership of the Force either, took aim at the current Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, whom he described as “illegal” and accused of stealing his passport.
He said, “I am living now without my glasses because one of you stole my glasses. You have done nothing to help me recover my glasses.
“Don't worry. But nobody can get away with it. It is not possible. The reason IGP is in problem today is that he stole my passport and he has not slept since that time.”
He also slammed the Nigerian government's controversial rehabilitation of former Boko Haram members while neglecting the welfare of police officers.
According to Sowore, “I have said it before, I'm not supposed to be your friend. But this is not about being friends with the police. It's about considering the future of the world you live in.
“Because if the police is not safe, I am not safe too in Nigeria. If the police is not well paid, this country is not safe.
“The reason Boko Haram is ravaging Nigeria is because they started mistreating policemen, and they gave soldiers police work.
“Now soldiers cannot do police work. Police cannot do their work. That is why Nigeria is fucked up today. That's why there are bandits everywhere. There are terrorists everywhere. There are kidnappers everywhere. There are robbers.
“Some policemen who retired, one of them told us that nothing can stop him from even joining Boko Haram.
“If Boko Haram will pay him his pension. The funny thing is that Boko Haram, the people who were formerly Boko Haram, rehabilitated Boko Haram are collecting pensions in Nigeria.
“If you rehabilitate as a Boko Haram member, you are given N2 million and a house in Yobe or Maiduguri. That is the life Nigeria is living in.
“But you are policemen who have served for 35 years. Some of you are retiring in a few days, a few months.
“Those of you who are inspectors, most of you I am sure, you have not been promoted for seven years. But your bosses are getting promoted every day and they are girlfriends. You know how it is in the Force headquarters.
“That is the problem we are here to solve.”
Sowore urged the officers to continue resisting the status quo, insisting they deserve far better.
“We will be back. We urge you again, when you go back, this is the beginning,” he said.
He told the police officers, “They will restrict you to the barracks, they will ask you not to cross the border but keep crossing it until you get liberated, until you get justice and justice for the police means better pay.
“I am telling you, none of you ought to be paid less than N500,000 every month. That is the least you should be getting.
“I’m even ashamed to get you N500,000, because the people who are managing your pension are children of these officers that are collecting not less than N2 million per month. The people who are at PenCom and the police pension limited.
“You are the ones they deduct their money from. You are the ones who are suffering.”
The thief who stole my Rayban AI glasses during #PoliceProtest earlier today at the @PoliceNG Force HQ is “Victor,” employed as a Police Cameraman with the Force PPRO, Olumuyiwa Adejobi @Princemoye1 apparently, he was specifically instructed by Muyiwa to snatch my glasses hoping… pic.twitter.com/jRBJJXfBRN
