Mother And Newborn D!e Due to Alleged Hospital Negligence In Akwa Ibom After Caesarean Birth (Videos)

A lady has taken to social media to raise alarm after a mother and her newborn d!ed in Akwa Ibom state following a caesarean section at General Hospital in Ikot Ekpene. 
 
The lady, Ndifreke Amos, who is the sister of the deceased was seen weeping profusely while accusing the hospital staff of negligence in the d3ath of the woman and her child.
 
According to Ndifreke, she brought her pregnant sister to the hospital on Saturday, August 30, 2025, requiring an emergency caesarean section but was told that there were no attending doctors. 
 
The woman remained unattended for over three hours, during which neither she nor her unborn baby received necessary medical intervention. 
 
Tragically, the baby d!ed when they finally operated on the mother.
 
On Sunday morning, the mother also passed away due to excessive bleeding. 
 
“My sister has d!ed. There were no doctors here. They didn't even open the theatre, my sister was unattended to for over three hours,” she cried, while calling the state governor to intervene in the case. 
 
“When they finally operated on her, the baby died. Two minutes after the baby d!ed, I begged the doctor to have blood available in case of another emergency, but they ignored me, asking if I am a doctor. 
 
"In those dying minutes, they now looked for another pint of blood; they didn't see it in this whole hospital. The doctors neglected my sister, and she d!ed.”
 
Reacting to the video, Governor Umo Eno expressed deep sympathy for the bereaved family and directed the Health Commissioner Dr. Ekem Emmanuel John to set up a commission of inquiry comprising medical and legal experts. 
 
“The attention of the Akwa Ibom State Government has been drawn to a video currently circulating on social media concerning the unfortunate death of a young mother and her newborn following a caesarean birth at the General Hospital, Ikot Ekpene,” the statement read. 
 
"His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno, PhD, deeply sympathises with the bereaved family and has directed the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ekem Emmanuel John, to immediately set up a high-powered commission of inquiry comprising medical and legal experts to establish the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident and recommend measures to prevent future occurrences.
"In line with this directive, the Honourable Commissioner, Dr. Ekem Emmanuel John, led a team from the Ministry of Health to the hospital at 12:10 a.m. for an on-the-spot preliminary inquiry and to obtain firsthand accounts from relevant stakeholders.
 
"The Government of His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno, PhD, remains deeply committed to safeguarding the lives of mothers and children and has earlier declared a statewide fight against maternal mortality as a core priority of his administration. 
 
"Over the past months, the Governor has consistently demonstrated this commitment through sustained investments in healthcare infrastructure, recruitment of skilled personnel, and strengthening of emergency response systems.
 
"The Ministry of Health assures the public that the outcome of this review will be handled with full transparency and that any verified cases of negligence will attract appropriate sanctions in line with civil service and professional regulations.
 
“We appeal for calm and understanding from the public as the Government works diligently to uncover the facts and take decisive steps to further strengthen maternal and child health in Akwa Ibom State. The health and safety of every Akwa Ibomite remain the utmost priority of this administration.”
