Buni Approved Automatic Employment Of 416 Newly Graduated Nurses And Midwives

The governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni, declared that 416 nurses who graduate from the State College of Nursing and Midwifery will be automatically hired. Buni made the announcement, yesterday, at the graduation ceremony of the state-owned Shehu Sule College of Nursing Sciences, Damaturu, the state capital.

Represented by his deputy, Alhaji Idi Gubana, Buni said the approval of automatic employment for the fresh graduating nurses was given to enhance and strengthen healthcare service delivery in the state.

He said, "This action is consistent with our ongoing investment in the health sector and our dedication to filling staffing shortages in our healthcare facilities" 

He said the 416 beneficiaries include 158 Community Nurses, 196 Basic Nurses and Midwives and 62 Higher National Diploma Nursing graduates.

The governor explained that the decision was part of his administration’s ongoing efforts to address workforce shortages and improve access to quality healthcare services and delivery in the state. He also said the state government had consistently supported the college over the past seven years, and it had yielded positive results, especially in the training of qualified health professionals.

"The government has hired more than 3,500 healthcare professionals in recent years, many of whom are graduates of this institution, to ensure adequate staffing and professionalism in the sector,” he declared.

He assured the college’s management of support to improve the quality of training, staff and students’ welfare, as well as conducive learning and teaching environment.

He promised to address their needs and reposition the institution as a leading health training centre in Nigeria.

Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr Muhammad Lawan Gana, earlier in his address, announced that the state recently emerged the best-performing in primary healthcare delivery in Nigeria, following an assessment by the Nigeria Governors’ Forum under a Federal Government initiative. He said the recognition earned the state a $1.2 million prize.

Dr. Hadiza Sabo, the college's provost, stated that between 2019 and 2026, the college graduated 1,485 students, all of whom received automatic job offers from the government.
