A heavily pregnant woman identified as Ruth Nen Maurice has tragically lost her life in Jos, Plateau State, after being struck by a vehicle whose driver was allegedly trying to flee from officials of the Vehicle Inspection Office.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, in the heart of the city.
Eyewitnesses recounted that Ruth had been standing by the roadside waiting for a vehicle to take her to the hospital for an antenatal appointment when the driver, in a desperate bid to escape a VIO checkpoint, performed a reckless maneuver that sent his vehicle crashing into her.
A close friend of the deceased, Ewan Boss Julz Odumu, broke the heartbreaking news on Facebook the following day, writing with visible pain about the loss. He revealed that Ruth had been carrying twins and was nearly at full term, making the tragedy all the more devastating.
He mourned not only the loss of his friend but also that of her two unborn children, who never got the chance to take their first breath or see the world all because of one person's reckless decision behind the wheel.
The Plateau State Police Command's spokesperson, DSP Alfred Alabo, confirmed the incident and stated that the driver had been apprehended. He added that an investigation is underway and that the suspect will be charged in court once it is concluded.
Attempts to reach the state's Chief Vehicle Inspection Officer, Jonathan Zam, for a response were unsuccessful, as he did not answer calls or reply to messages sent to him.
