American rapper Azealia Banks has sparked controversy after making sweeping negative remarks about Nigerians on social media, claiming they are unwelcoming toward Black Americans.

The rapper, known for her hit song "212," took to her X account to allege that Nigerians are "cold-hearted" and deliberately push Black Americans away comments she made in the context of expressing no desire to identify with Nigerian heritage.

In contrast, Banks spoke positively about Ghana, describing the country as far more open and welcoming to Black Americans, and expressed pride in her Ghanaian roots.

Her remarks quickly drew fierce pushback from Nigerians online, many of whom accused her of unfairly stereotyping an entire nation of over 200 million people based on what they described as a generalized and baseless claim.

Rather than walk back her comments in the face of the backlash, Banks doubled down, continuing to engage her Nigerian critics in a combative manner on the platform.

The episode has reignited broader conversations about the complex and sometimes strained relationship between Nigerians and the Black American diaspora, as well as the ongoing debate about African countries' receptiveness to people of African descent seeking to reconnect with the continent.
