Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State and probable presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has called on Nigerians to reject polarizing politics and use the 2027 general election to demand capable leadership.

Kwankwaso's words came after Islamic cleric Sheik Sani Yahaya Jingir made contentious remarks on the prospect of keeping a Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket in the 2027 election.

Jingir's remarks drew criticism from a number of sources, and Kwankwaso became one of the well-known politicians to openly denounce what he called "rhetoric capable of deepening religious and political divisions."

Kwankwaso stated in a statement released in Kano that remarks that encourage discord and division should be avoided, especially if they originate from powerful religious figures.

According to him, it is the duty of religious and political leaders to advance truth, harmony, and peace.

Additionally, Kwankwaso explicitly denied that Kano residents endorsed the controversial statements.

According to him, Kano residents shouldn't be seen as supporting divisive sentiments.

According to Arise News, Kwankwaso characterized Jingir's remarks as polarizing and harmful to national cohesion.

As Nigeria approaches the 2027 general election, the former governor's intervention occurs at a pivotal moment in the country's political history.

After President Bola Tinubu and Vise President Kashim Shettima were elected in 2023, the Muslim-Muslim ticket continues to be one of the most delicate political issues in the nation.

Critics have consistently maintained that Nigeria's religious variety ought to be represented in the nation's highest leadership positions, while supporters of the arrangement have defended it as a political decision rather than a religious tactic.

Kwankwaso is clearly on the side of those advocating for more caution when it comes to religion politics based on his most recent remarks.

He maintained that religious and political leaders need to be aware of the possible repercussions of remarks that could erode national unity.

Additionally, the previous governor of Kano linked the matter to the 2027 election.

He said that Nigerians will have a chance to reject bad performance and praise good government during the election.

Nigerians would have the chance to voice their opinions at the polls, Kwankwaso said, explicitly criticizing the current leadership.

His influence in northern Nigeria makes his intervention politically significant.

In the 2023 election, Kwankwaso, the New Nigeria Peoples Party's presidential candidate, garnered a lot of support in Kano.

He is now the vise presidential candidate of the opposition NDC.

Because of this stance, his remarks are especially important as opposition lawmakers work to form a coalition that can take on the ruling All Progressives Congress in 2027.

The controversy over Jingir's comments has also highlighted the potential significance of religion in the upcoming presidential election.

When choosing candidates for president and vise president, Nigeria's political parties have traditionally depended on regional and religious balance.

Questions about whether the nation will once more witness a Muslim-Muslim ticket are expected to continue to be prevalent as the 2027 election takes form.

Kwankwaso's intervention implies that the opposition would try to incorporate a theme of national unity into their campaign.

His remarks, however, also have political ramifications because the NDC must persuade voters that its own suggested leadership structure is capable of bridging religious and geographic divides.

For the time being, Kwankwaso's message is that national unity should not be sacrificed for political rivalry.

He has urged voters to assess the government's performance in the 2027 election and called on religious and political leaders to foster harmony and peace.

The statement adds another layer to what is already shaping up to be a highly contested presidential election.
