Imo State's main specialist hospital has carried out its first robotic-assisted surgery, representing a major achievement in the state's push to bring advanced medical technology to its people.
The surgery was performed at the Imo Robotics and Oncology Centre inside the hospital and was led by a surgeon from the United Kingdom who specializes in this type of procedure.
The state announced the milestone on Friday, describing it as a turning point in healthcare in Imo.
The hospital has been upgraded with modern equipment and is operating through a partnership between government and private companies.
The facility is designed to handle cancer treatment, urological conditions, and other complex diseases.
According to the state government, the new centre is meant to reduce the need for Nigerians to travel abroad for specialized medical care.
It combines robotic surgical capabilities with cancer services and will also provide opportunities for training doctors and building international partnerships.
Robotic-assisted surgery offers several advantages over traditional methods.
The technology allows surgeons to operate with greater precision and control, giving them better visualization of the area being operated on.
For patients, this can mean smaller cuts, less bleeding, shorter recovery time, and better overall outcomes.
The state has also launched a health insurance programme to help residents afford quality care.
People can access healthcare services through the programme for N15,000 per person per year, making advanced medical treatment more affordable.
The hospital's doctors and nurses are enthusiastic about the new capability.
When the governor visited the facility on Wednesday before the surgery, staff expressed excitement about what the centre would be able to accomplish.
