Sokoto Court Sentences Man to Death Over Kidnapping and Killing of Three People

A high court in Sokoto has sentenced Ibrahim Usman, also known as Dan Iyali, to death for his part in the kidnapping and killing of three people in the state.

Usman was convicted in a case brought by the Department of State Services over an incident in September 2023.

He was arraigned with other suspects who are still at large.

The charges were criminal conspiracy, kidnapping, culpable homicide punishable with death, and voluntarily causing grievous hurt without provocation.

The DSS said this is another death sentence secured against a suspect in kidnapping and killings in the state.

The ruling comes months after another Sokoto high court sentenced three men to death by hanging for terrorism and illegal arms trafficking.

They are Yusuf Muhammad, also known as Sallau, a Niger Republic national, Jabbi Alhaji Yalle and Kabiru Muhammad.

DSS operatives arrested them on June 13, 2025 over alleged cross-border arms smuggling and terrorist activities.

In the judgement in suit number SS/45C/2026, the court found them guilty and ordered that the money recovered from them be handed over to the federal government.
