3 People Die In Minna Government House Stampede

At least three people have died and several others were hurt in a stampede at the Niger State Government House in Minna.

The injured are being treated at Minna General Hospital.

It happened on Tuesday night.

Reports say some youths linked to a planned protest over the deaths of 37 local miners were invited to the Government House to call off the protest.

Two of the dead were a woman named Dije and her daughter Hurairat.

Both were displaced people from Allawa community in Shiroro Local Government Area.

Hurairat lost her husband Abubakar, a butcher, to bandits in 2023 on the Allawa-Pandogari Road.

After her community was abandoned, she moved to Minna and lived there as a displaced person.

Dije lived in Gurmana with her husband and had come to visit her daughter.

They both heard the governor would share money at the Government House and went there.

One of the displaced people, Mallam Musa Allawa, said online that the mother and daughter will be buried at 10am on Wednesday.

Some people close to the governor, including appointees, posted on social media before the stampede that the youths had gathered to show support for Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago.

One appointee said more people, including women, later rushed to the Government House after hearing the governor would give out 10,000 naira to those present.

The governor's Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, said the government will release a statement soon.

Police spokesman SP Wasiu Abiodun said he will check the facts and get back.
