The Kebbi State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers has rejected an old video making the rounds on social media, which it says was doctored to claim that education is poorly funded and teachers are poorly paid in the state.

The state NUT chairman, Zaki Sarki, said this in a statement in Birnin Kebbi.

He described the person behind the video as a sponsored agent working for desperate opposition politicians, and said the aim was to damage the government's work in education and other sectors.

Sarki said the video is a ploy to gain cheap popularity by turning teachers and workers against the government.

He said Governor Nasir Idris met a situation where teachers were paid below N18,000 and quickly raised it to N75,000, a fact he said the maker of the video knows but chose to leave out.

He listed some of the administration's achievements in education, including mega schools in the four emirates, more than 2,500 new classrooms, the recruitment of 2,000 teachers, and the supply of furniture and learning materials.

He said attempts to drag the government's name down will not work.

The NUT chairman said the union stands solidly behind Governor Idris and will keep supporting him to deliver the dividends of democracy to Kebbi people.

He said the union condemns the video and everything in it.

Sarki also urged opposition politicians to check their facts before making claims against the government, and to give credit for the progress recorded in the education sector.
