Nollywood actress and filmmaker Ruth Kadiri has called on NAFDAC to step up its checks on products sold in Nigeria, saying fake and harmful goods are everywhere.
In a video message, she said many Nigerians buy food, drinks, medicines, cosmetics and household items thinking they are safe, only to find out later that some are badly made, contaminated or fake.
She said the problem is bigger than money lost, because unsafe products can put lives at risk, especially children.
She said she is worried about kids dealing with serious health problems she blames on fake products.
Kadiri then shared what happened to her. She said she bought garlic, blended it, went upstairs and came back to find it had turned green.
She added that she is now more careful about buying packaged drinks for her children because she is unsure of what is inside them.
She urged Nigerians to speak up when they see suspicious products being made or sold around them.
She said it is not only a buying problem but a problem for everyone.
She also begged NAFDAC to pay closer attention to the lives of Nigerians, saying many people are sick and not getting better.
Kadiri advised parents and guardians to be extra careful with food, medicines and other regulated goods, and to always check expiry dates and NAFDAC registration numbers before buying.
Her warning has stirred fresh talk about fake and substandard goods in the country.
It is worth noting that the green garlic is only her personal experience.
It does not prove the garlic was fake, contaminated or unsafe, and no lab test or official finding on the cause of the colour change was reported.
