Troops say an air strike in Borno State killed more than 40 fighters from the Islamic State West Africa Province, including a senior commander.
The strike hit a fighter camp in Badu Village in Guzamala Local Government Area on October 10.
The military says intelligence showed the fighters were planning coordinated attacks on army bases.
The strike also destroyed two vehicles and about 20 motorcycles the group used to move around.
Captain Mohammed Goni, acting Military Information Officer for Operation Hadin Kai, said the fighters belonged to a unit that carries out patrols and plans attacks.
In a separate case in Sokoto State, soldiers at a forward base in Binji say they killed a suspected Lakurawa militant in Soruro village early on Monday.
They also recovered an AK-47 rifle, a magazine and bullets.
The state police spokesperson, DSP Ahmed Rufai, gave a different account.
He said six armed bandits attacked a local man, Dikko Abubakar, and killed him, and the rest of the group ran off.
The incidents come as the military and security forces keep up operations against armed groups in the North East and North West.
