Many people have been left shocked to their bones after a plane crashed into a river while they stood watching.

A video has shown the horrific moment two people were killed when a plane plunged into a river in broad daylight.

Daily Mail UK reports that the plane crashed into Perth's Swan River in front of thousands of shocked Australia Day revellers.

A man and woman, believed to have been husband and wife, died around 5pm after the plane seemed to lose power while attempting to land on the water.

Witnesses said the aircraft had been performing along with another plane as part of the festivities before the accident happened.

The video shows the plane passing over the water before banking left, at which point it seems to lose some power.

The nose then tips forward and it plunges toward the water before one of its wings clips the surface, causing it to slam into the water around 200m from the city shore.

The crash was witnessed by hundreds of families who had been gathering all day to see the city's fireworks display.

In total 300,000 people were expected at the event, which has now been cancelled for the first time in its 33-year history.

A spokesman for Western Australia Police said: 'Police can confirm that two people have tragically died in a plane crash into the Swan River at around 5pm today.

'It is believed the two people were the only occupants of the plane.

'Out of respect to the deceased and their families, City of Perth has cancelled the Skyworks.

'People are asked to start leaving the city area and those who were planning to come into the city are asked to stay away.'

Stephen Brown, Western Australia's action police commissioner, said it was a miracle that the plane had not hit anyone on the ground.

The plane broke apart on impact, with nearby police boats rushing to the scene along with rescue crews.
