President Buhari Orders Immediate Evacuation Of Military Checkpoints Nationwide

 

The News Agency of Nigeria has quoted the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Defence, Aliyu Ismail, as saying that President Muhammadu Buhari has directed that all military checkpoints across Nigeria be dismantled immediately.

Details of the directive is still sketchy, and it is unclear whether checkpoints in states in the North-east, set up in the wake of the Boko Haram insurgency, would also be removed.

Military checkpoints multiplied across Nigeria after the insurgency intensified, with so many of them causing terrible traffic snarls and subjecting commuters to untold hardship.

Security experts also argued that it was better for Nigerians to bear the inconveniences caused by military checkpoints than allow Boko Haram insurgents free passages to targets in cities.
