A Romanian education ministry official has resigned after saying that schools should teach young women how to walk provocatively.
Vasile Salaru
Vasile Salaru, a State Secretary in the Education Ministry in Romania, has resigned after he said girls in schools should be taught how to walk wearing high heels, dance the tango, be a good host and walk enticingly in public. He also said girls should walk with chest out, bottom out and let boys faint.
While in Deva on Tuesday, he stated in a press conference that the schools should introduce classes of good conduct for schoolgirls so that they could learn 'how to walk straight and to be good hosts through attitude and posture.
"Our pupils don’t know how to walk on the street. I would like to see a schoolgirl from the 11th or 12th grade walking nicely on heels, dancing waltz or tango, to be good hosts. I think it’s a side of the Romanian education that has been totally neglected and which could remind, and I hope you won’t smile, of the old boarding school education," Salaru was quoted by Glasul Hunedoarei paper.
The education official resigned after his comment was misconstrued by the general public and sparked outrage. Several student organizations protested because of his comment and called for his resignation. He was also reported to the National Anti-Discrimination Council.
Salaru who quietly resigned on Thursday, said his action was to prevent further harm to his party and that people had taken his comment out of context.
