Yobe Police Warns Against Herders/Farmers Clash

The herder groups raised alarm over alleged encroachment into cattle routes and grazing reserves attributing most of the clashes to this.

Yobe State Police Command on Wednesday said it won’t tolerate herders/farmers clash in the state.

The warning was issued by the state commissioner of police, Yahaya Abubakar, during a meeting organised by his office with farmers and herders.

He said that the meeting was called to discuss ways of ensuring peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders across the state especially during the current harvest season

He said that the meeting, which should have been conveyed earlier, was conceived as a result of rising cases of farmers and herders clashes in some parts of the state.

He said, “As from today, clashes between farmers and herders must end, the Nigeria police are ready to partner with all concerned groups to halt the situation.”

The Chairman of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, Yobe State chapter, Ibrahim Nangere had earlier said that the group is a peace-loving association and will not condone any uncharitable behaviour from its members.

He assured of the readiness of Miyetti Allah leadership to support all the security agencies in the state to address the existing conflicts between farmers and herders.

Caretaker committee chairman from Bursari Local Government, Zannah Abatcha, whose area witnessed such clashes in recent days called for dialogue and peaceful living between farmers and herders.
