Naira Marley's Many Troubles

Posted by Samuel on Sun 12th Jan, 2020 -

There is no doubt at all that Naira Marley has become one of the most controversial figures in the Nigerian entertainment scene.

Naira Marley

Music artiste, Azeez Fashola, aka Naira Marley’s name is practically synonymous with trouble. Ever since he attracted mainstream attention last year, the Soapy singer has constantly been in bed with controversies.

Though his case with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is still pending, the singer had another run in with the law some weeks ago when he was said to have stolen a Toyota Camry car. The driver of the car had hit a vehicle in Marley’s motorcade around the Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, and one of the singer’s brothers was said to have got into the car and driven it off.

The case was eventually charged to court and when Fashola refused to make an appearance, the presiding judge ordered the police to present Marley at the next court hearing or the singer would be slammed in jail.

Barely days into the new year, a cleric, albeit a controversial one, Chris Omashola, had declared that Marley was a demon. He wrote on Twitter, “In 2020, God told me Naira Marley is a demon. He is satanic and should repent before it’s too late. His songs are demonically inspired to destroy the destiny of the youths of this generation. Nigerian youths should desist from calling themselves Marlians…”

Even as the dust was yet to settle on that, a child rights advocate and coordinator of the Child Protection Network, Toyin Okanlawon, is telling anyone who would listen that Naira Marley is polluting the minds of innocent children in the country.

She admonished parents, “Currently, there is a real madness going on among Nigerian youths all over the country. Many high school students and undergraduates are the chief followers of this guy (Naira Marley). They call themselves Marlians. Watch your children and wards. The self-acclaimed female Marlians don’t put on underwear, while the males don’t use belts to hold their trousers any more. Monitor your children and wards. The manners and anthems are getting beyond our thoughts and are very ferocious. It’s high time we get hold of it before our future is taken away from us.”

However, the singer has shown that he is unmoved by the fierce resistance against him by a section of the public. It remains to be seen whether these odds would eventually make or mar the man called Naira Marley.
