South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has cast his vote in the country's 2026 local government elections.
He urged citizens to come out in large numbers and use their democratic rights.
Speaking on Wednesday, Ramaphosa said the polls give South Africans a chance to shape the future of their communities.
He said he was encouraged by the number of people who had turned out, adding that their participation showed democracy is alive.
He expressed confidence in the African National Congress, ANC, saying the party would improve service delivery if voters give it another term to run the municipalities.
He said the government would rebuild local structures to make its promise of a better life a reality, despite the challenges facing local governments.
He also said he believes all political parties will stay committed to serving the people.
The president told voters they have a responsibility to decide the future of the country and their municipalities at the ballot box.
The local elections will decide who runs municipalities and oversees essential services in communities across the country.
