A 29-year-old tricycle rider has been sentenced to 14 years in prison with hard labour for defi%ing a three-year-old girl in Tiegber, in the Ghana Upper West Region.

The Wa High Court handed down the sentence on Friday, October 30, 2026.

Justice Osei-Wusu presided over the case.

The man, Naah Mashood, was convicted after the Upper West Regional Police Command announced the outcome in a statement on Monday, November 2, 2026.

Police said the girl's parent had hired Mashood to pick her up from school and take her home on his tricycle, a local taxi known as a "Cambuu."

On February 23, 2026, he allegedly took the girl to a secluded spot and abused her inside the tricycle.

The girl's mother reported the matter to the police.

The next day, officers from the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit, DOVVSU, arrested Mashood.

He was first charged before the Wa District Magistrate Court and later tried at the High Court, where he was found guilty.

The police praised the officers who investigated and prosecuted the case, along with others who helped bring it to court.

The command urged parents and guardians to keep a close watch on their children.

It also asked the public to report suspected child abuse and defilement to the nearest police station or DOVVSU office.

The police said they will keep working to protect children and bring offenders to justice.

The statement was signed by the Upper West Regional Police Commander, DCOP Francis Yiriboare.
