According to a report by PUNCH Metro, the police in Lagos State have arraigned one Sharon Williams before the state Magistrates’ Court in Ogba for allegedly locking up and assaulting her five-year-old nephew (name withheld) for six months.
PUNCH Metro had reported that 43-year-old Williams allegedly used a cutlass to inflict injuries on the boy’s head.
It was gathered that a neighbour reported the matter to the state Ministry of Women Affairs, which transferred the case to the Ministry of Youths, Sports and Social Development, while the Deputy Coordinator for Child Protection, Lateef Akinborode, said it took about five hours for the suspect to surrender herself for arrest after security agents tried to gain access into her apartment around 8pm on July 14, 2021.
It was learnt that she was taken to the Ijede Police Station.
The police arraigned the suspect on Thursday on three counts bordering on grievous harm and assault occasioning harm.
She pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The prosecutor, Kehinde Ajayi, told the court that the defendant injured the victim on the head and in different parts of his body.
Following the plea of the defendant, Chief Magistrate O. A. Ajibade, granted Williams bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.
The magistrate ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government and adjourned the matter till September 7 for hearing.
