The National Agency for the Control of AIDS has characterized the passing of Dr. Herbert Wigwe, the late Group Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings, as a tragic event.

NACA, in a press statement on Wednesday, said Wigwe left behind a legacy of dedication and leadership in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

Wigwe, his wife, Doreen; son Chizi; and a former Group Chairman of Nigerian Exchange Group, Abimbola Ogunbanjo, lost their lives in the helicopter crash which occurred near a border town between California and Nevada, United States on Friday.

Until his death, Wigwe served as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the HIV Trust Fund of Nigeria.

The Director General of NACA, Dr. Gambo Aliyu, said “It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the passing of Dr. Wigwe, who left behind a legacy of dedication and leadership in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

“His contributions to the HIV/AIDS cause were invaluable, and his absence will be deeply felt.

“During this difficult time, our thoughts and prayers are with the grieving families and the entire Access Holdings Plc community. May they find strength and solace in the memories of their loved ones.

“NACA stands in solidarity with all those impacted by this loss and remains committed to continuing the vital work in the fight against HIV/AIDS in honour of Dr Wigwe’s enduring legacy.”
