A tea vendor, Abdulrashibu Ya’u, who was accused of beating a 20-year-old man to death over allegations of theft has been arrested by the Jigawa State Police Command in Dutse Local Government Area of the state.
The spokesperson of the command, DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, who disclosed this in a statement on Monday, August 26, 2024, said the suspect, Ahad accused the deceased of stealing his bread, milk, noodles and petrol.
According to the PPRO, the suspect tied the deceased, Hassan Garba, with a rope and repeatedly struck him with a stick until he became unconscious.
“On 19/08/2024 at about 0500hrs, information from the village head of Sararai village, Jigawar tsada town in Dutse local government council disclosed that, a tea vendor by name Abdulrashibu Ya’u ‘m’ 40yrs of Sararai village has seriously beaten up one Hassan Garba ‘m’ 20yrs of the same address and became unconscious based on the allegation of stealing his bread, milk, noodles and petrol,” the statement read.
"Upon receiving the report, the patrol team promptly proceeded to the scene, arrest the suspect and convey the victim to Rasheed Shekoni Teaching Hospital for immediate medical attention.
"Regretfully, on their arrival, the medical doctor on duty certified him dead. The corpse was examined photographed and later released to his relatives for burial according to Islamic rite.
"The suspect admitted during questioning at the State Criminal Investigation Department Dutse that the deceased had upset him by stealing his goods to the point where he had informed his parents about it, but nothing had been done.
"Upon apprehending the deceased at this point, he made the decision to tie him with a rope and begin striking him with a stick in secret.
"Neighbors in the area heard the deceased's cries for help, but they were unable to save him until police officers showed up.
“Upon completion of discreet investigation, the suspect will be diligently arraigned in court to face the full weight of the law.”
