Catholic faithful from across Lagos gathered at the Holy Cross Cathedral on Wednesday for a solemn memorial Mass in honour of Pope Francis, who passed away on Easter Monday, April 21, at the age of 88 due to complications from a cerebral stroke and heart failure.
The special service, organised by the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos and led by Archbishop Alfred Martins, featured prayers, hymns and tributes celebrating the late Pope’s life and spiritual leadership.
A condolence register was also opened for mourners to express grief and gratitude.
Archbishop Martins, who led the procession, described Pope Francis as a transformative figure who guided the Church with compassion, advocacy for the environment, and a message of inclusivity.
He noted that the Pope’s 12-year papacy had left an indelible mark on the global Catholic community.
As a mark of respect, the archdiocese declared a nine-day mourning period from April 21 to April 29, inviting the faithful to reflect on the Pope’s enduring legacy.
