The incident, which occurred at about 2:50pm on Friday, threw the community into mourning after what was supposed to be a joyful celebration turned into a tragedy.

SaharaReporters learnt that the shooting happened during the wedding fatiha of one of the group’s members.

The suspect, identified as 45-year-old Adamu Idris, allegedly discharged a locally made firearm in the air during the celebration — a common but dangerous practice at such events in Northern Nigeria.

The bullet, however, struck a young boy, Malam Yusuf, in the stomach.

A 25-year-old woman, Shamsiyya Salisu, was also hit in the waist by the same bullet.

Both victims were rushed by concerned residents and police operatives to the General Hospital in Jibia.

However, the boy was confirmed de@d by doctors on arrival. The injured woman is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital.

The Katsina State Police Command confirmed the incident and said the suspect has been arrested.

The spokesperson of the command stated that a locally made rifle, one live cartridge and an expended cartridge were recovered from Idris.

“Preliminary investigation has commenced and the suspect will be charged to court after completion of the investigation,”
a police source told SaharaReporters.

Community members have condemned the use of firearms during social events, calling on security agencies and traditional institutions to clamp down on the practice before more lives are lost.
