Datti Baba-Ahmed, the Labour Party’s vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, has refuted claims suggesting he is aligning himself for a possible coalition outside the party.

Datti insisted that he remains committed to Labour and is not considering a move to any other platform including the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

During a recent appearance on Arise News, Baba-Ahmed clarified that while some may view his reconciliation efforts within the Labour Party as a political strategy, his motivations stemmed from a deeper desire to bring healing and stability to the party and its supporters.

"The Abure faction is yearning for leadership," he said, referring to the internal division within LP.

"I told them I am going to do it. While I was there to reconcile the party, I was also reconciling the Labour Party with the general public. I was doing many things at once."

Responding to suggestions that his outreach could be interpreted as a safeguard against being sidelined in a potential opposition coalition possibly favouring former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Baba-Ahmed refuted the idea, saying, "My thinking was, 'convince me why I should come to ADC.' Where was ADC in 2023 when Labour Party claimed we got 10 million votes?"

He reiterated his commitment to the Labour Party and expressed continued support for Peter Obi, even if their political paths diverge. "I repeated the welcome that Labour Party’s arms are open to embrace Peter Obi back. I would like him to again win the nomination of LP and contest in 2027,  with or without me."
