Ireti Kingibe, the senator representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has explained her decision to leave the Labour Party for the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Speaking during an interview on ‘Politics Today’, a programme on Channels Television on Wednesday, Kingibe said the Labour Party became factionalized.

“Labour Party is in two factions right now. The Abure faction and the Nenadi faction. So what do you expect me or any other person in Labour Party to do? Of course only people who are not holding political officers would say oh, I remain in Labour Party.

“But if you are holding a political office or you plan on running then which faction are you running? At the Local Council elections, Labour Party is not fielded. So, obviously it’s not a viable platform for seeking election as of Today.

“So the constitution allows every elected member to look for a other platform if your original party is factionalized because I strongly believe that those who defect without meeting the constitutional requirements should lose their seats, but in our case it doesn’t apply.

“That’s exactly what the constitution says.

"Talking about my seat, the truth of the matter is, from Olusegun Obasanjo till now, hardly anybody controls how the people of the FCT vote,” she said.
