Ogun State Police Command's Igbesa Division detectives have detained 27-year-old Chidi Ebere on suspicion of killing a commercial motorcyclist. The victim, Sunday Ogbu, 36, was killed in Igbesa on Wednesday at about 7am.
The suspect had allegedly posed as a passenger before attempting to hijack the motorcycle, leading to a violent altercation in which he stabbed the motorcyclist to death.
On Thursday, the State Police Command’s spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, released a statement to the press confirming the details of the incident.
At roughly 7 a.m. on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, the suspect allegedly hailed a ride from 36-year-old Sunday Ogbu before launching a violent assault in a desperate bid to hijack the motorcycle, Babaseyi stated.
“A witness at the scene raised the alarm, prompting police to rush to the scene. The victim was rescued and taken to the hospital for urgent medical attention but was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty.
“The suspect was apprehended immediately, while the motorcycle and the knife used in the attack were recovered as exhibits. The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Eleweran, Abeokuta, for thorough investigation and prosecution.”
The heinous act was denounced by Bode Ojajuni, the state commissioner of police and assured that justice would be served. Ojajuni urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the police.
