Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage has opened up about the importance of a record label's role in an artist's mental health and overall wellbeing, saying she did not fully appreciate it until she left Mavin Records.
Speaking on a recent episode of the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast with Joey Akan, Savage recalled how during her time at Mavin, she could always turn to label boss Don Jazzy and her labelmates whenever she was going through a difficult moment online or personally.
She described how she would walk into Don Jazzy's room, sit with other Mavin artists, talk things through and even cry if she needed to, before moving on together as a team.
She noted that her experience at her current foreign label has been different, saying the personal touch and emotional support she once enjoyed are no longer available to her in the same way. She said she misses that aspect of her time at Mavin.
Savage also advised upcoming artists to look beyond the financial terms of a record deal and pay attention to whether the label genuinely cares about them as people or simply views them as a source of income.
Tiwa Savage joined Mavin Records in 2012 and departed in 2019 before signing with Universal Music Group. Despite leaving, she has continued to describe Mavin as family.
