Kano and Jigawa Customs Hits N88.93bn Revenue as Seizures Mount

The Kano and Jigawa Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has generated eighty eight point ninety three billion naira in revenue from January through September 2026.

During the same period, seizures and detentions recorded a combined Duty Paid Value of two point one six billion naira.

The Acting Area Controller, Deputy Comptroller UU Adamu, disclosed this at a press briefing on Friday, presenting the command's achievements over the nine-month period.

The command collected sixty three point zero eight billion naira in the first half of the year, with collections rising significantly thereafter to reach the year-to-date figure of eighty eight point ninety three billion naira.

July proved to be the strongest month in the command's history, generating over fourteen billion naira alone.

On anti-smuggling operations, the command intercepted fourteen hundred ninety one cartons of foreign spaghetti valued at thirty eight point seventy four million naira and two thousand nine hundred twenty eight packs of foreign macaroni worth two hundred eighty point seventy three million naira.

Officers also seized foreign parboiled rice, vegetable oil, soaps and smuggled vehicles.

The command recovered five forty foot diverted transit containers valued at six hundred forty five point one six million naira, seven smuggled vehicles valued at four hundred ten point fifty four million naira and eight suspected diverted transit truck heads worth three hundred point ninety one million naira.

The command also intercepted unregistered pharmaceutical products comprising over seven hundred thousand tablets and vials and ampoules, which were handed to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control.

In a significant wildlife trafficking operation, customs intercepted forty eight animals on August twenty five, including fifteen primates, four wild cats, twenty five wild birds, two albino crocodiles and a honey badger.

Adamu described this as the largest and most diverse single seizure of wildlife in the history of the Nigeria Customs Service and probably the entire West African region.

Three suspects were arrested and handed to the Special Wildlife Office.

The command also intercepted undeclared foreign currencies comprising seventy three thousand three hundred dollars, fifteen thousand nine hundred seventy five pounds sterling and eight hundred twenty seven thousand eight hundred Saudi Arabian riyals.

Two suspects were handed to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for investigation.

Officers arrested two more suspects with nine hundred ninety three point nine metres of vandalised high voltage aluminium conductors and seized six thousand seventy two counterfeit agro-packaging materials.

Notably, some intercepted smuggled vehicles were found carrying government service official number plates apparently used to evade customs control.

Adamu urged legitimate traders to comply with customs regulations, stressing that the command would continue balancing enforcement with trade facilitation.

He assured that compliance remains the most effective way of conducting business without unnecessary interruption.
