The Yobe State Specialist Hospital in Potiskum has documented cases of acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis, commonly referred to as Apollo, prompting public health advisories as the infection spreads throughout the town.

Hospital leadership urged residents to prioritise personal and environmental sanitation alongside preventive measures to limit transmission.

The Medical Advisory Committee chair indicated the facility had recorded multiple cases, though actual prevalence likely exceeds documented figures as some affected individuals treat symptoms domestically rather than seeking professional care.

Residents were advised to maintain regular hand-washing, refrain from ocular contact, and avoid sharing towels, garments, bedding, utensils and personal articles.

Healthcare workers recommended that infected individuals restrict close interpersonal contact and obtain medical attention upon symptom manifestation.

The State Health Commissioner indicated the ministry had implemented containment protocols, distributing educational materials to stakeholders via social media whilst directing community mobilisers to conduct locality-based awareness campaigns.

Potiskum residents reported escalating instances of eye redness, swelling, itching, discomfort and aqueous discharge.

Multiple household members contracting the condition simultaneously heightened concerns regarding transmission velocity.

Residents characterised the situation as alarming, describing rapid dissemination across the community.

Some individuals reported the infection had assumed epidemic dimensions, affecting nearly every household within the town.

The condition produces intense redness and pain, with some patients experiencing recovery following topical and oral pharmaceutical interventions.

Residents adopted protective eyewear in containment attempts.

Primary health authorities advised consistent hand hygiene using soap and potable water, ocular contact avoidance and non-sharing of towels, handkerchiefs, ophthalmic medications and eyeglasses.

They cautioned against introducing substances including bodily fluids, nutritive solutions, animal waste or industrial liquids into ocular tissues, cautioning such practices could precipitate irreversible damage or sight loss.

Medical professionals confirmed Apollo's highly transmissible nature, spreading through infected individual contact or contaminated surfaces.

Healthcare specialists dismissed the belief that direct eye contact with infected persons transmits the disease, emphasising instead the importance of hand sanitation and professional medical consultation upon symptom emergence.
