Lagos Assembly Approves New Budget Plan for More Roads, Rail and Hospitals

Lagos State House of Assembly has passed the 2026 Appropriation Amendment Bill, allowing the state to reorganise its spending priorities and speed up major projects.

The bill came after Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu asked the Assembly to approve changes to how money was allocated in the state's 2026 budget.

The Speaker sent the request to the budget committee for review.

The committee chairman explained that changes in how the budget had been spent made it necessary to adjust the plan.

Reorganising priorities would help projects move faster and deliver better results in the remaining months of the year.

The amendment also raises the state's bond borrowing from 150 billion naira to 200 billion naira to pay for infrastructure and development work.

Major projects getting attention under the revised budget include the second phase of the Blue Line Rail from Mile 2 to Trade Fair, completing and furnishing Massey Street Children's Hospital, finishing the 280-bed General Hospital in Ojo, building Ketu Ejirin Psychiatric Hospital, completing the Omu Creek project and buying housing units.

The budget also covers building drainage systems across the state, environmental and cleaning work along the Coastal Road, replacing vehicles for waste and traffic services, waste management improvements, buying security and emergency equipment and fixing potholes.

One lawmaker stressed the importance of the Assembly monitoring how the money actually gets spent, saying the governor must stick to the approved priorities and that funds should go only where approved.

The Assembly passed the bill and sent a copy to the governor for his approval.
