Ondo Gov Bans Okada on Major Akure Routes

Ondo State Government has banned commercial motorcycles, known as okadas, from operating on certain routes in Akure, the state capital, to improve traffic management.

The governor's transport adviser said the government is ready to prosecute riders and other road users who break traffic laws, especially ignoring traffic signals.

Okada riders will only be allowed to operate up to specific points in the affected areas.

Those coming from the Police Officers' Mess route will stop at approved locations, while riders from the First Bank area in Alagbaka will end operations around the Teaching Service Commission axis.

The government plans to enforce traffic laws more strictly after public awareness campaigns to prepare residents for changes caused by new infrastructure projects, including an ongoing flyover construction in Akure.

Road users must start following modern traffic management systems, including obeying traffic lights and using designated bus stops.

The official said it is no longer business as usual and everyone must follow the rules.

Commercial motorcycle and tricycle operators who ignore traffic signals face arrest and prosecution.

The government has noticed that okada and tricycle riders often move before getting the green signal, and this will not be tolerated.

Residents are urged to cooperate with the government's efforts to modernise transportation and improve traffic flow.

The government will also install zebra crossings and speed limit signs, especially near schools and other sensitive areas, to improve road safety.
