Nigerian singer Spyro has spoken about his childhood struggles, saying his father's words made him feel worthless and hurt his confidence.

During a podcast interview, the singer reflected on his upbringing, the pressure of being a pastor's child and how his father's comments affected how he saw himself.

Spyro said his father would make certain remarks to him, though he acknowledged his father might not have meant to cause such damage with his words.

His father would constantly use certain words that hurt him.

The singer said there was no positive encouragement for him to build on while growing up.

He felt like the odd one out in his family.

Because of the lack of positivity, he began to see himself as a failure.

This fear affected him deeply and made him anxious about his future.

The fear followed him through secondary school and university.

He constantly worried whether he would even graduate from university.

His father's words made him question his own worth and value.

“Because of this fear, I mean, from some of the things that my dad would say and the words that he would use, I kind of felt useless, you know,” Spyro said.

He also spoke about the pressure often faced by children of pastors to conform to a particular lifestyle expected by their parents.

“Pastor’s kids always face this thing where there’s so much pressure on them to conform to a certain kind of lifestyle that their parents want them to live,” he said.

“I was under so much pressure,” Spyro added.
