Police Arrest Suspected Robber After Attack on Officer in Akwa Ibom

Akwa Ibom Police have arrested a suspected armed robber and recovered two locally made pistols and two machetes in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area.

The arrest followed an emergency alert on September 14, 2026, early in the morning.

Police received a report of a violent attack in Ikot Ekweng village around 5am.

Officers on patrol found Inspector Henry, who said he had been attacked by Ini Mfon.

The suspect hit the police officer with a machete while trying to steal his tricycle.

Henry was injured in his right hand.

Police traced Mfon to his home and arrested him.

A search of the premises turned up two locally made pistols and two machetes.

Detectives are investigating where the weapons came from and whether they were used in previous crimes.

They're also checking if the suspect is linked to other criminal networks in the area.

The suspect is in police custody helping with the investigation.

The weapons have been secured as evidence.

Police Commissioner Baba Mohammed Azare praised the operatives for their quick response.

He said the arrest shows the command's commitment to fighting violent crime.

The commissioner said Akwa Ibom will continue intelligence-led policing, targeted raids and aggressive patrols to recover illegal firearms and dismantle criminal networks.

He urged residents to report suspicious activities and illegal firearms to the police.

Anyone who provides information will have their identity kept confidential, he said.
