Shettima Arrives New York to Speak for Nigeria at UN Assembly

Vice President Kashim Shettima has left Nigeria for New York to represent President Tinubu at the 81st United Nations General Assembly session.

Shettima will lead a delegation including Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal, ministers and senior government officials.

The UN General Debate runs from September 22 to 28 under the theme Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations that Delivers for All.

Shettima will deliver Nigeria's national statement outlining the country's positions on national development, peace and security, economic growth and international cooperation.

He'll participate in high-level meetings on the Right to Development, climate action and other issues important to Nigeria and Africa.

The Vice President will attend the reception for heads of delegation and hold bilateral meetings with leaders of other countries, international organisations and development partners.

Discussions will focus on advancing Nigeria's economic diplomacy and strengthening partnerships, particularly on global financial reform, sustainable development, climate finance and multilateral cooperation.

Tinubu is not attending the assembly.

Shettima represented him at the 79th and 80th UN General Assemblies in 2024 and 2025, delivering Nigeria's statements at both.

Shettima is expected back in Nigeria after finishing his engagements in New York.
