Posted by Thandiubani on Fri 09th Oct, 2015 - tori.ng

The family members of those who died in the 2013 Immigration Service recruitment exercise protested at the National Assembly over negligence and unfulfilled promises...

It was still the usual tale of woes as hundreds of the families of victims for the scammed 2013 Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) recruitment exercise yesterday registered their grievances over unfulfilled promises to the House of Representatives.

Family members of the dead and injured who participated in the botched NIS recruitment exercise in 2013 protested and complained of government's nonchalance in fulfilling promises it made 18 months after their sons and daughters were killed in a recruitment exercise marked by disorganization, fraud and deaths.

The protesters came with placards with various messages of suffering, negligence and total disregard for their welfare by the government and its agencies.

Reacting to the incident, Leader of the House, Gbajabiamila sympathized with the victims and expressed surprise at how their issue was left unattended. “I personally in my capacity as the House leader would take this matter up. All hands will be on deck to make sure this matter is addressed expeditiously and judiciously, I want to believe that a promise is a debt,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the protesters, Mr. Edmund Osumah, intimated the House Leader that the family members have been suffering since the death of their brothers and sisters who lost their lives in the exercise. He expressed dissatisfaction at the way the issue was being handled by those involved.

Earlier, the House received a complaint letter from the protesters and urged them to exercise patience as matters will be handled accordingly. The house also set up a 3-man committee comprising of the House leader, Femi Gbajabiamila, minority leader, Leo Ogor and Aminu Shagari to look into the matter with immediate effect.

Speaker of the House, Yakubu Dogara adopted the motion to invite the Immigration authorities to give reasons why nothing has been done after 1 year and 6 months since the incident. He tasked the panel to expedite action and find a solution to the matter.
