Super Eagles Player Ratings: Libya 2 Nigeria 3

Posted by George on Wed 17th Oct, 2018 - tori.ng

The Super Eagles may have contrived to lose a two-goal lead against Libya, but eventually found a way to pick up a win that sends them top of Group E. Find out how each player fared.

The Super Eagles

Francis Uzoho: 4.5/10 Had a nightmare performance and seemed uncomfortable for large periods of the game. He made a harsh of several basic crosses, as well as routine saves, and definitely could have done better for both goals. His poor kicking reared its ugly head after the break as well, but his shot-stopping admittedly improved as the game wore on.

Leon Balogun: 6/10 Unusually lost an aerial battle in the buildup to the North Africans’ opener, but dealt reasonably well with what was thrown at him over the course of encounter. He sometimes struggled when dragged out wide, owing to his lack of pace.

William Troost-Ekong: 5.5/10 Had an above average outing and covered well for Ola Aina whenever the full-back was caught out of position having marauded forward. The centre-back was caught in no man’s land in the move leading to the Libyans’ equalizer.

Ola Aina: 5.5/10 Offered little going forward and was caught out defensively several times, especially in the opening half. He improved slightly after the restart and made a good block to prevent an early equalizer. However, the right-back didn’t impress over both games against the North African heavyweights and you feel he’s failed to stake his claim for the right berth down the line.

Jamilu Collins: 6.0/10 The Paderborn left-back was the better of the inexperienced full-backs, and kept things simple. It was another decent performance by the 24-year-old.

Oghenekaro Etebo: 5/10 The tenacious midfielder, yet again, struggled in a deep role and often left his partner isolated in the middle of the park. After a disappointing showing, he was rightly withdrawn for the more disciplined John Ogu for the final quarter of the game.

Wilfred Ndidi: 6.0/10 Gave a good account of himself considering he was left by himself time and again at the heart of the midfield, and will have been relieved when Rohr introduced Ogu late on.

Samuel Kalu: 5/10 The wideman cut a peripheral figure all game, and never seemed able to exert his influence on proceedings before his withdrawal with 12 minutes remaining.

Alex Iwobi: 6.5/10 The attacking midfielder couldn’t quite match his prior performance against the North African side, but gave a good account of himself nonetheless. He showed great vision to play in Ahmed Musa in the buildup to the West Africans' opening goal.
Ahmed Musa: 7.0/10 The captain showed showed great awareness to assist Odion Ighalo’s first, and demonstrated quick feet, as well as composure, to score the Super Eagles’ second. He never quite got a foothold in the game after that, but his early impact was outstanding.

Odion Ighalo: 8/10 Followed up his hat-trick at the weekend with a brace on Tuesday night, and the second was a thing of beauty. The China-based forward also played in Musa for Nigeria’s second and Rohr will have been pleased with his late winner as he continues to silence his critics.

John Ogu: N/A

Henry Onyekuru: N/A

Semi Ajayi: N/A
