According to a report by The PUNCH, no less than six people have been killed in a fatal crash that occurred on Thursday, at about 11.33am, along the Darazo -Dukku highway in Bauchi State.

The crash, which happened about two kilometers from the Darazo office of the Federal Road Safety Corps, involved two vehicles — a commercial vehicle and a private vehicle.

The Sector Commander, FRSC, Bauchi State, Corp Commander Yusuf Abdullahi, confirmed the crash to our correspondent.

He said that the commercial vehicle, a Volkswagen bus with registration number KTG-950ZZ was driven by one Ahmad Umar; while the name of the driver of the private vehicle, a Peugeot Saloon with registration number AKK-53CB, is unknown.

Abdullahi said that the crash was caused by speed violation.

“The crash happened about two kilometers away from our Darazo office and it involved 18 people —  12 male adults, four female adults and two female children.

“Immediately we got a distress call, our men rushed to the scene of the crash within some few minutes for rescue operation.

“When they got there, they evacuated the victims to Darazo General Hospital for medical attention.

“It was at the hospital that six people comprising five male adults and one female adult were confirmed dead by a medical doctor.

“Eight other passengers, made up of five male adults and three female adults, sustained varying degrees of injuries. The Police Motor Transport Division in Darazo was also informed,” the sector commander said.

He added that the remaining four passengers escaped unhurt.

Abdullahi noted that the bodies were deposited at the Darazo General Hospital mortuary and will immediately be released to the relatives of the deceased for burial.

He said that the obstructions on the road were cleared for other road users to have easy passage, while nine mobile phones and N20,590 cash were recovered at the scene of the  accident.

The FRSC officer called on drivers to be more careful while driving and should drive within the recommended speed limit, especially during this rainy season so that lives and properties would be saved from destruction.

“I wonder how this accident happened on that road because it is a straight road.

“So, I call on drivers to be more careful on the road. They should obey road traffic regulations so that loss of lives and properties would be reduced to the barest minimum.

“I am sending a team immediately to the place to investigate the actual cause of the crash,”
he said
